▪ (At) Socastee 35, North Myrtle Beach 21 | Shayla Baldwin had 17 points and five steals and Mia Angelo chipped in 10 points and five steals to lead the Braves to a win over the Chiefs.

Socastee had 17 steals as a unit, and got out to a 6-point halftime lead. In the second half, the Braves outscored North Myrtle Beach 18-8 for the victory.

“I’m real happy with the defensive intensity and aggressiveness,” Socastee coach Ginger Ford said. “Offensively, we had some opportunities but missed some easy baskets. We need to convert on more of the easier baskets we get. But, all-in-all, the kids went after loose balls on the floor, hustled and played hard.”

Socastee – which is trying to adjust without star point guard Kira Bell, who is out with a torn ACL – will have some time to work on its game before playing in Leon Brogdon Holiday tournament at Trask Coliseum Wilmington, N.C., which starts Dec. 28.

“I don’t feel like we’ve gotten a lot of practice time,” Ford said. “So having some extra days of practice before we play, we hope to get more consistent scoring from our team as a whole. We just want to learn to play together a lot better.”

Goodrich finished with a double-double, pouring in a game-high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds as she helped St. James to a win over the Warriors.

“Bethany was able to finish around the basket tonight a little better than she’s been doing,” Sharks coach Stan Patterson said. “Also, she had a really solid fourth quarter.”

The Sharks jumped out to a 13-3 advantage in the first quarter and extended their lead to 16 at halftime. St. James takes on St. Mary’s (Canada) on Friday at 5 p.m. in the first round of the CresCom Holiday Invitational tournament.

“We just want to keep working, trying to get better,” Patterson said. “That’s the bottom line. We’re all together and everybody is all in, just trying to get better.”

The sophomore filled the bucket to the tune of 27 points, leading the Lady Trojans to a 60-37 win over South Columbus (N.C.).

Green Sea-Floyds scored in double figures in each quarter, but blew the contest open in the second by outscoring its opponent 16-6.

“We played a solid game all night,” said Lady Trojans head coach Tracy Kienast. “They didn’t let up, and that’s a credit to all of our girls. I could not have asked for a better way to finish before we break for the holidays.”

In addition to Jackson’s big night, Green Sea-Floyds senior power forward Quadasia Gillard continued her outstanding play, scoring 13 points and pulling in 13 rebounds. Paige McDaniels also had eight points for the Lady Trojans.

▪ (At) Socastee 56, North Myrtle Beach 51 | Jason Cudd had 15 points and Marcus Hemingway scored 13 as the Braves edged the Chiefs.

“North Myrtle Beach was a little shorthanded tonight, but they scrapped and played a good game. Credit to them,” Socastee coach DeAndre Scott said. “Our kids did enough to win.”

The Braves’ goal was to get above .500 by the holiday break.

Check.

“We are glad about that,” Scott said. “We only won four games all last year and to already surpass that is good. Of course we wanted to be above .500 at the break and we’ll keep trying to improve and give ourselves a chance to be competitive in ballgames before heading into [Region VIII-AAAA] play.”
