▪ (At) Carolina Forest 50, Laney (N.C.) 36: Down by three at intermission, a strong second half performance Tuesday night by Carolina Forest broke open a close contest en route to a 50-36 win over Laney (N.C.).

The Panthers were keyed by sophomore center Alexis Tomlin, who dominated play with 20 points and 19 rebounds, much to the delight for her head coach.

“(Tomlin) played great, it’s pretty much what we saw from her last season,” said Carolina Forest girls basketball coach Stacy Hughes. “She was hitting the boards, and her ability to run the floor really helped us a lot. It was really big for us tonight.”

Ellen Nardella added 14 points on the night, while her partner in the backcourt Cheyenne Pyles had five points and five assists.

Carolina Forest’s defensive intensity in the second half was equally impressive, yielding a total of 15 points in the final two periods of game action.

“The past couple of days we were keying on our man-to-man defense,” Hughes said. “It certainly played a big role. We also pressured the ball better than we have in recent games.”

The importance of Tuesday night’s victory proved two-fold for the Panthers, as several bench players received time on the floor.

“A couple of kids were able to contribute tonight,” Hughes said. “That’s big, because it helps develop confidence and allows us potentially to go deeper in our rotation as we prepare for region play.”

Leading the way for Laney was Jayda Malone with 11 points, while Baley Edwards chipped in nine of her own.
