High school roundup (Dec. 2)
The Socastee girls basketball team is trying its best.
But without star point guard Kira Bell – who suffered a torn ACL earlier this year – there’s only so much the Braves can do.
On Wednesday, Socastee outlasted Waccamaw for a 30-27 victory. However, Braves coach Ginger Ford knows it will take some time for her squad to get comfortable again without Bell.
“We’re trying,” Ford said. “We haven’t had much practice time.We want to get back on track and just take it one day at a time. I’m trying to get all the young pieces together and we’re learing as we go.”
Haley Altman had a team-high eight points, Mia Angelo scored seven and Mercer Roberts chipped in four points and grabbed eight rebounds for Socastee, which led 23-18 entering the fourth quarter and held off the Warriors to preserve a victory for a youth-laden Braves squad.
“I thought early on we played well but shots wouldn’t go in after that. Waccamaw stepped up their game,” Ford said. “I was happy that we pulled it out with such a young team and held them off. I’m happy with the win.”
Jada Torrance paced Waccamaw with a game-high 13 points, and Danielle Sunye added six.
