Myrtle Beach girls tennis tops Hartsville to reach Lower State finals
The Myrtle Beach girls tennis team will have a familiar foe standing between it and another state championship appearance.
With a 6-1 win over Hartsville on Friday night, the Seahawks advanced to the Lower State finals, in which they will face Hilton Head on the road Monday.
“This was a great week for us,” Myrtle Beach coach Jeri Himmelsbach said. “Berkeley was a good team and Hartsville was a great tuneup for us, especially after the rain delays and a (first-round) bye. It was a great prep week to get us ready for Hilton Head.”
The Seahawks beat Hilton Head 4-2 in last year’s Lower State finals en route to winning the Class AAA state championship.
It was the second straight year Myrtle Beach has eliminated Hilton Head from the playoffs. Three years ago, however, Hilton Head ousted Myrtle Beach en route to a state title.
“We beat them last year, but I try to forget about that,” Himmelsbach said. “This will be a good, tough match. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play for a Lower State championship again.”
