Myrtle Beach basketball standout Schneider verbally commits to Richmond
Bryce Schneider didn’t want to wait around to make his decision.
With two years of high school basketball remaining, the Myrtle Beach junior guard verbally committed to the University of Richmond while on a visit to the school with his family over the weekend. Schneider had a handful of offers, including one from Texas Tech, where his godfather, Tubby Smith is the head coach.
However, the ability to see significant playing time early while remaining in the NCAA Division I ranks was too much to pass up.
“We’ve talked quite a bit about Richmond and how they fit with his skill set with what he does right now,” Myrtle Beach coach Craig Martin said. “I’m not sure I can think of a better place that fits better with him right now, offensively and defensively. It’s pretty much close to perfect for the type of player he is right now.”
Schneider averaged 14.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore, helping the Seahawks to a third-place finish in Region VII-AAA and a playoff berth.
Richmond advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Tournament in March and last made the NCAA tournament in 2011.
But college basketball is still two years away for Schneider.
“I think all the pressure is gone,” Martin said. “I think it becomes more of a pressure to him to prove himself to the team because of his leadership and his ability to put aside the individual stuff.
“He’s performed. He had a great summer with his travel team. He had a great summer with us. He proved himself to his teammates. … He can just go play now and not really be concerned about anything else.”
Another area basketball player picked up his third NCAA Division I offer last week. Carolina Forest’s Duane Moss added one from Delaware, following the offers he picked up from Tennessee Tech and Charlotte over the summer.
During his sophomore year last Winter, Moss led the Grand Strand in scoring (19.5 ppg) while also averaging 7.5 rebounds per game. He was a Toast of the Coast selection from The Sun News.
