High school roundup: Trojans cross country nabs second win of season
Coming off a nice win in Tuesday’s season opener, the Green Sea Floyds girls cross country team had another impressive showing Thursday.
The Trojans had eight of the top 10 finishers and eighth grader Alyssa Slobodiak was the top finisher for the second straight meet.
“I was very pleased,” Green Sea Floyds coach Phyllis Elvington said after her team beat Marion, Latta, Loris and Hannah-Pamplico in a five-team meet. “I realized once you have your first meet, you see where you are and everyone had their heads on straighter today. Our times were a little better and we were home and that always helps. We had a nice home crowd and a good number of fans but it rained on us in the beginning, which also helped cool it down a little.”
On Thursday, Slobodiak (24:33) finished almost two minutes better than she did Tuesday, when Green Sea Floyds swept the top 5 in a tri meet with Loris and Marion.
“I was tickled Alyssa won the race,” Elvington said. “She’s doing well.”
On the boys’ side, Alfredo Vasquez (3rd, 19:24) was the only top 5 finisher for the Trojans as Marion took the meet over Green Sea Floyds, Loris, Hannah-Pamplico and Latta. However, the Trojans had three others finish in the top 10 (Bryce Ford, 8th; Dawson Floyd, 9th; Gage Floyd, 10th).
“I was pleased with the boys’ time,” Elvington said. “They improved a lot. Everyone is sticking with it and being consistent and the times are showing that. People are sticking with their mile pace and that has helped us a lot.”
Green Sea Floyds is getting set for an eight team meet at Marion next Tuesday, and Elvington said her team will have a challenge on its hands.
“There’s gonna be a few biggers schools,” she said. “That’s fine, it just makes us stronger.”
