Mickey Wilson was adamant that his Myrtle Beach football team was not the No. 1 team in the state when the preseason polls were released in August.

Following a loss to Charlotte Christian to open the season, the Seahawks fell from that top spot. Myrtle Beach, still the only area team ranked in the S.C. Prep Media Football Poll, came in at No. 4 this week. South Pointe took over No. 1, with Hartsville and Greer just behind.

Spartanburg (Class AAAA), Dillon (AA) and McBee (A) were the other No. 1 teams this week. That last one came only after Class A power house saw its state-best 55-game winning streak come to an end last Friday in a lopsided loss to Abbeville. According to MaxPreps, Christ Church’s winning streak was second longest active streak nationally.

Locally, two teams were appearing in the “receiving votes” category. Conway, following a 55-0 win over South Brunswick (N.C.) is essentially sitting at No. 13 in Class AAAA. Meanwhile, Loris, which is 0-2 following losses to a pair of bigger schools, is receiving votes in Class AA.
