Tuesday’s high school roundup

To say Green Sea Floyds cross country coach Phyllis Elvington has a young squad is a bit of an understatement.

Elvington has no juniors or seniors on her team, but young players like eighth-grader Alyssa Slobodiak – who took first place in Tuesday’s meet – are already stepping up.

“[Alyssa] does have a bright future,” said Elvington, whose team defeated Loris and Marion in a tri-meet at Loris High School. “She has a very good, consistent running pace; most of my girls do.”

Elvington said she challenges her girls by having them practice with the boys.

“It makes the girls a little more competitive,” Elvington said. “With them always running with the boys, I think it’s gonna be a good formula.”

The Trojans girls had all five of the top-5 finishers in their first meet of the season Tuesday.

“They ran well but it was so hot and all of the moisture was coming out of the ground and everyone’s time was off. The sun was really beating down,” Elvington said. “It was the first meet for all three teams and was kind of a, ‘Let’s see what we can do’ kind of thing. We were all pleased we could get out there and get this meet under our belts.”

Elvington just hopes her youthful team can keep up the good results.

“We’re really fielding a lot of seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders,” Elvington said. “As long as they stay with you, that’s a good thing.”

High school volleyball

Michelle Altman admits this is a rebuilding year for the Aynor volleyball team.

She also believes it means the future is bright.

The Blue Jackets, who lost their main attackers to graduation and are relying on several underclassmen, improved to 2-2 after a 3-0 win over Green Sea Floyds on Tuesday.

“It’s definitely a rebuilding year,” Altman said after her team won 25-14, 25-12, 25-5. “We have a strong group of 10th-graders. We should be good for several years to come.”

Aynor does return leaders in setter Berkley Causey and libero Kacie Squires, and Altman is seeing progress from young attackers Jacy Trimble and Katherine Bagnal.

“They’re still making mistakes, but every game I see a progression of them getting better and better,” Altman said. “Tonight I tought they played more confidently. Instead of trying not to make mistakes they were attacking.”

As for the Blue Jackets overall?

“We’re doing all right at this second,” Altman said.

Causey had five aces, two kills and 11 assists, Bagnal had seven aces, five kills and two blocks, Trimble had three aces and two kills, and Squires had five aces and two kills Tuesday.

(At) St James 3, Conway 0 | Mallory Farmer had 11 service points, six kills and two blocks as the Sharks shut out the Tigers (25-23, 25-19, 25-17).

Skyla Corey had seven service points, five blocks and two kills and Allyson Jenkinson added seven kills and six service points for St. James (2-1).

Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 3, (at) Carolina Academy 0 | Natalia Antonucci had a team-high nine kills and Julia Markley had a team-high six aces to lead the Saints to a win over Carolina Academy (25-12, 25-17, 25-12).
