Monday’s high school roundup: Aynor girls tennis tops Carolina Forest
Marcella Toth likes to challenge her girls early in the season.
Rainy weather helped up the ante this year.
The Aynor girls tennis team defeated Carolina Forest 6-1 on Monday in a contest that featured several hard-fought matches.
Playing larger schools such as Carolina Forest early in the season is a strategy the Blue Jackets coach likes to use to get her team battle tested early on. “It prepares us for our region,” she said.
“It’s great. I like playing bigger schools,” Toth said. “I like challenging my girls.”
Adding to the challenge – for both teams – was the fact they got in little practice the week before the season opener Monday.
“I think both teams said they only got one practice day in last week due to the weather,” Toth said. “Not getting to practice all week, I think that they had really good matches.”
In fact, four of the five singles matches went three sets.
“Every one of them were great matches,” Toth said. “Every one of them played really well. It was very entertaining and they were good matches. Both opponents did a fantastic job.”
It made for a school that was not reflective of the outcome, she said.
“It could have definitely gone either way,” Toth said.
