Champs! Strong second round carries Waccamaw girls golf to state title

The Waccamaw girls golf team won its first state championship in almost 20 years on Tuesday.

The Warriors shot a 661 to win the Class 3A championship by 26 strokes at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina.

It was Waccamaw’s second state championship in program history with the other coming in 2005.

Anna Brown shot a 157 and Kayla Holek shot a 163 to lead Waccamaw. Both made all-state honors, which is made up to the top-10 finishing golfers. Ella Bischof shot a 171 while Victoria Gullo and Elzabeth Ashcraft each had a 174.

Waccamaw began the day with a six-shot lead over Daniel but shot a team score of 328, 20 shots better than the Lions to win the title. Seneca was third with a 697.

Daniel’s Peyton O’Brien was the individual champion, winning in a playoff over Aynor’s Ella Kate Barnett. Both shot a 151.

In Class 5A, Dorman won its second straight championship and Blythewood sophomore Caroline Hawkins repeated as individual champion.

The Cavs finished with a 649, four shots better than Chapin. Dorman came into the day tied with Chapin, which was playing on its home course.

Dorman used a strong front nine to take a 10-shot lead into the final nine holes and held on to the four-shot victory.

Hawkins finished with an 11-under-par 135 to win by 14 strokes. Hawkins’ 11-under tied the girls golf state record under par with Oceanside Collegiate’s Smith Knaffle, who won the Class 2A championship in 2020.

In Class 4A, May River won its third title in four years. The Sharks shot a 646 over the two days to win by 32 shots over Catawba Ridge. South Aiken was third at 686.

May River’s Claire Green became the first Shark golfer to win an individual championship after shooting rounds of 70 and 71. Green was the only golfer under par in the championship.

North Myrtle Beach was fifth and Myrtle Beach tied for 12th. North Myrtle Beach’s Caitlyn Ferry and Myrtle Beach’s Yana Jeram earned all-state honors.
