The Waccamaw girls soccer team completed a dominant season with a state championship on Saturday.

The Warriors scored four goals in the first half on their way to a 5-1 win over Travelers Rest to win the Class 3A championship at Irmo High School.

It is Waccamaw’s second title in program history and second this season for the school’s athletic program. The Warriors girls tennis team won a state championship in the fall.

The Warriors finished the season at 23-1 with their lone loss coming to Wade Hampton (G) in the second match of the season. Waccamaw could stake claim to the best team in the state this year regardless of classification.

The Warriors defeated Class 5A champion Wando, 4-3 (OT), on March 29 and 2A champion Oceanside Collegiate, 3-0, on April 17 and SCISA 4A champion Pinewood Prep, 1-0, on April 25.

Waccamaw outscored its opponents, 132-12, this season and only gave up more than one goal in a match one time. In five playoff games, the Warriors outscored their opponents, 32-2. Their Warriors’ closest match came against second-ranked Camden they won 1-0 on May 6.

Travelers Rest, which was making its first championship appearance, took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when C.J. Hawkins scored in the 15th minute.

But the Warriors answered with a goal from Corine Gregory and took control of the match. Gregory finished with two goals and an assist in the game and scored 47 goals and 14 assists this season.

Megan Matthews added two goals for the Warriors and Lindsey Lattimer had one.
