‘Find someone younger and cheaper’: Socastee AD Renfrow says HCS not renewing his contract
Tim Renfrow confirmed Monday that he is out as athletic director at Socastee High School and indicated Horry County Schools’ decision to cut ties had to do with money.
The longtime Braves AD and former football coach replied to an email inquiry about his job status, stating “I am done. I was ‘at will’ and they did not renew my contract. Saving them money. Find someone younger and cheaper.”
An email inquiry to Horry County Schools relating to Renfrow’s status was answered with a vague explanation of the district’s policy pertaining to retired employees who continue to serve in a position that the two sides hash out on a year-to-year basis. The email response did not state whether or not the district decided to cut ties with Renfrow.
“Pursuant to District Policy and the hiring of retirees, the Superintendent is authorized to employ retirees to work in the District on an ‘as needed’ basis when their employment would serve the best interest of the District. Each year, the retiree may receive a letter of agreement indicating that if the person accepts the terms of employment, he/she will be an at-will employee,” the email reads.
“The agreement may be terminated for that particular period of employment by either party upon written notice to the other party. A letter of agreement is for the specified year only. Therefore, it is not uncommon for an at-will employee to be informed that his or her employment may conclude at the end of any given school year, or anytime beforehand.”
As of 4 p.m. Monday, Horry County Schools Director of Strategic Communications & Community Engagement Lisa Bourcier had not replied to a follow-up email asking for further clarification on how the policy related to Renfrow’s job status.
Renfrow is the father of former Socastee and Clemson football star Hunter Renfrow, who is now a wide receiver for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
