Updated area high school playoff schedule (May 8)

Ten years after Myrtle Beach last made the Class AAA Lower State baseball tournament, the Seahawks are heading back.

With a pair of wins on Friday at Aiken (12-0, 5-4), Tim Christy’s team capped off an improbable run after losing the district tournament opener at home and losing the home-field advantage it earned via its Region VII-AAA title.

It defeated Darlington 3-1 on Monday, Hilton Head 2-0 on Wednesday and then doubled up Aiken. Those four straight victories punched the Seahawks’ ticket to the Lower State tournament, when they’ll join Gilbert, Berkeley and Hartsville.

Myrtle Beach will open at Gilbert Monday in the renewed double-elimination tournament.

The Seahawks will join fellow area baseball teams Carolina Forest, Waccamaw and Aynor among the Lower State qualifiers among area programs. Those three open their respective class Lower State games Saturday.

St. James boys soccer also pulled off a relative upset on Friday when it went on the road and defeated Hilton Head 2-0. The Sharks will have a quick turnaround to face fellow No. 2 seed Aiken on road at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In girls soccer, Grand Strand lost its three remaining teams when Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Waccamaw all lost on the road.

A make-up date for Socastee boys tennis against Summerville has not been announced.
