Friday’s area sports briefs
The Coastal Carolina baseball team had a pair of longballs lift them Friday afternoon.
Casey Schroeder and David Parrett each hit their 10th home runs of the season to pace the Chanticleers as they edged Presbyterian 8-6.
Schroeder hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, and David Parrett hit a two-run blast in the ninth to give Coastal the final lead of the game.
Schroeder, Parrett, Michael Paez, Zach Remillard and Tyler Chadwick each had two hits for Coastal (28-13, 12-4 Big South), which overcame three errors that led to four unearned runs.
Junior Mike Morrison made his first collegiate start as the Chanticleers were without normal Friday starter Alex Cunningham, who is 6-0 on the mound and is out this weekend with an injury. Morrison was solid, striking out five and walking one in five innings, but Coastal’s errors led to five runs (two earned).
Bobby Holmes allowed two hits and struck out four in two innings for the Chants, and Andrew Beckwith picked up the win as he retired all four batters he faced.
Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian are scheduled to play game two of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
CCU track and field
The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track programs had a pair of top-five finishes and a qualification for one of Saturday’s championships.
Highlighting the men’s side was the 4x200 meter relay team of Therius Styles, Kahlim Denmark, DeAndra Lipscomb and Alexander Hass, who won their heat by more than two seconds, clocking the second-fastest time in school history (1:25.76). The foursome finished in ninth place and qualified for Saturday’s Championship of America Invitational.
Junior hurdler Desmond Wallace finished 12th in the 110-meter hurdles (14.09 seconds), finishing just .01 seconds shy of his season and personal-best as well as .02 seconds off the school record. Wallace just missed out on qualifying for Saturday's championship.
On the women's side, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Camille Hurley, Olivia Coopwood, Christina Davis and Jessica Gelibert paced the Chanticleers on Friday, earning another medal for the team. In their first such event of the season, the group finished fourth (58.09 seconds), the second-fastest time in program history.
Earlier in the day, Amirah Al-Bayyinah won the Chanticleers' second medal of the weekend after finishing fifth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.45 meters (40-10.25), her second-best jump of the spring.
Lastly, freshman Chloe White capped Friday's events with a ninth-place finish in the javelin (43.32 meters). White has finished in the top 10 in each of the six meets she has competed in this spring.
Saturday's events, beginning with the men's 10,000 meter race at 7 a.m. and concluding with the men's 4x400 meter relays at 6 p.m., will conclude the 121st running of the Penn Relays.
