SOFTBALL

(At) Conway 7, Sumter 4 | Conway rallied from a 4-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to defend its home field.

The Tigers join region foes South Florence and Carolina Forest in the playoffs, which begin next Thursday.

Conway pitcher Neci Hemingway (7-5) picked up the win for Conway (10-10 overall, 5-4 Region VI-AAAA). Ashley Rowell, Anna Watson and Chelsea Mitchell each had two hits for the Tigers.

Coach Mike Skipper’s team will be either a three or four seed in the playoffs, depending on Friday’s games. The Tigers play at home against Carolina Forest.

(At) Waccamaw 6, Dillon 5 | Waccamaw cleared up the top four spots in Region VIII-AA with a night remaining in the regular season.

And Aynor likely isn’t complaining.

The Warriors handed Dillon its second region loss of the week with a 6-5 win against the defending Class AA state champions. Isabel Sanchez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run; Leah Boghosia was 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth; and Olivia Dunlap contributed the game-tying RBI before scoring the final go-ahead run.

Waccamaw locked up the region’s No. 3 seed for the playoffs. The game also means Aynor needs only a victory over winless Mullins at home on Friday in order to clinch the Region VIII-AA title outright. The Blue Jackets defeated Mullins 11-0 in five innings in March.

If Aynor defeats the Auctioneers again, Dillon would be the No. 2 seed, while Loris is automatically the fourth and final playoff team from the region.

BASEBALL

(At) North Myrtle Beach 7, Georgetown 3 | In one day, North Myrtle Beach went from sixth in Region VII-AAA to third.

Earlier Thursday, a previous Chiefs’ loss to Wilson was reversed to a victory after it was discovered Wilson had used an ineligible player. Then, North Myrtle Beach went on to a more conventional victory over Georgetown.

North Myrtle Beach (4-5 Region VII-AAA) clinched a playoff spot with the win. Georgetown, also 4-5, is also playoff bound.

The Chiefs play at Myrtle Beach on Friday, while the Bulldogs head to Wilson.
