Monday’s area sports briefs
After building a big lead early, the Green Sea Floyds had to escape with a victory Monday night.
Maegan Milligan doubled in a pair of runs with two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Trojans rallied to beat Marion 11-10.
Green Sea Floyds had built a 9-3 lead through three innings before the Swamp Foxes scored four in the fourth and three in the sixth to go up 10-9.
“It was absolutely amazing,” first-year Trojans coach Dixie Cox said. “The girls played hard and pulled through in the end. RBIs are what saved us tonight.”
Milligan, who also pitched for the win, finished with a pair of doubles. The biggest, though, came at the most crucial time.
“Maegan stays focused the entire game,” Cox said. Tonight was her senior night ceremony and she pulled us through to the win. She throws strikes when we need them and comes through at the end of games when we need her.”
Green Sea Floyds sits in third place in Region VII-A and has already clinched a playoff spot a year after winning just two games.
“Teamwork,” Cox said of the key to the turnaround. “Working together as a team and being able to steal bases and just hitting the ball.”
