Saturday’s area sports briefs

The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track and field team swept the titles at the Big South Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The men won seven individual events and a relay. The women won eight individual events and a relay.

CCU men who won events were: Alexander Hass (100 meters, school-record 10.52); Jerome Coaxum Jr. (400m, 49.39); Carrington Fernandors (110m hurdles, 14.83); Reggie Nelson (long jump, 23-9); Robert Castellani (javelin, 195-6); and Ryan Minor (shot put, 49-4 1/4; hammer throw, 180-4). The Chants’ 1,600-meter relay team – Steve Carr, Coaxum Jr., Kahlim Denmark and Nick Seabright – won in 3:21.03.

CCU women who won events were: Camille Hurley (200m, 24.70); Jessica Gelibert (100m hurdles, 13.76; 400m, 54.52); Christina Davis (400m hurdles, 1:01.04); Aynslee van Graan (1,500m, 4:29.96; 800m, 2:14.75); Letitia Saayman (3,000m, 9:51.82); and Teka Simpson (long jump, 18-5 3/4). The Chants’ 1,600-meter relay team – Christal Green, Imani Boatwright, Davis and Olivia Coopwood – won in 3:21.03.

CCU men with runner-ups were: Carr (400m, 50.11); Joseph Keitt (1,500m, 3:52.07); and Zach Bolton (shot put, 48-9 1/2).

CCU women with runner-ups were: Symphony Thompson (200m, 24.94); Hurley (100m hurdles, 13.87); Coopwood (400m hurdles, 1:02.51); Green (400m, 56.89); Saayman (1,500m, second, 4:37.08); Caroline Pallini (hammer throw, 134-7; discus, 135-0).

▪ Women’s scores–Coastal Carolina 218, High Point 142, Liberty 109, Campbell 78.

▪ Men’s scores–Coastal Carolina 176, Liberty 158, High Point 126, Campbell 89.

CCU women’s tennis

▪ Charleston Southern 4, Coastal Carolina 0 | At Asheville, N.C., the Eagles’ Marketa Placha, Yvonne Hubler, Angelica Sidorenko and Mi’Kola Cooper each won singles matches to clinch the Big South title.

CCU softball

▪ (At) Liberty 5-5, Coastal Carolina 4-4 | Cassie Gingerich singled in the game-winning run to lead the Flames to a win in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Madison Kotchey drove in four to lead Liberty in the opener.

College baseball

▪ (At) South Carolina 3, Vanderbilt 2 | Logan Koch drove in the game-winning run on a single to highlight a three-run sixth inning that lifted the Gamecocks past the Commodores to clinch a series win.

Max Schrock and Alex Destino also drove in runs in the inning.

▪ (At) Clemson 8, Duke 2 | Zack Erwin allowed one run on five hits and struck out nine in 8 2/3 innings and Steven Duggar drove in three runs to lead the Tigers to a series-clinching victory.
