Friday’s area sports briefs
The Coastal Carolina womens tennis team is heading to the Big South championship match with a 4-2 win over No. 3 Winthrop in a semifinal match Friday.
Saturday's championship match will feature the top two seeds as the No. 2 Chanticleers will take on No. 1 Charleston Southern in a rematch of last year's Big South semifinal match. The Buccaneers claimed a 6-1 victory in the regular season meeting between the sides, handing Coastal its only loss on its home court on April 8.
Coastal has won the Big South title twice in program history with the most recent championship coming in 2007. Overall, it’s Coastal's 13th appearance in the championship match, which is second-most in Big South history behind Winthrop.
Saturday's championship match is set to begin at noon. Coastal's last win over Charleston Southern came in the semifinals of the 2012 conference tournament.
