A trio of Grand Strand swimmers came away with gold this weekend at the S.C. state swim meet in Columbia.

The big winner among the local contingent was Waccamaw’s Emma Sullivan, who took home a pair of Class 3A state swimming championships.

She started the day with a win in the 200-yard freestyle event, her time of 1:55.65 almost three seconds ahead of St. Joseph’s Elizabeth Loudermilk. She would later add to her collection by claiming the 500-yard freestyle title, claiming the title.

Her contribution was key in the Warriors’ girls swim team earning 218 points, good for a fifth in Class 3A.

Two other local favorites also left with titles.

Carolina Forest’s Taylor Steele put a cap on a strong year with a win in the Class 5A girls 100-yard breaststroke. She also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley.

St. James’ Casey Mitchell won the Class 4A boys 500-yard freestyle. He also was third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Wando’s boys and girls swim teams swept the Class 5A titles, with Eastside doing the same in Class 4A. St. Joseph’s won the Class 3A boys championship, while Bishop England won the girls title.
