Panos comes through in clutch as Horry Post 111 staves off elimination at states
Hayden Panos earned only a single hit in four at bats Sunday afternoon. But boy did that hit make a difference.
His team hoping to stave off elimination at the state American Legion tournament, Panos’ base hit in the fifth brought in two runs to break a scoreless tie against event hosts, Sumter Post 15.
It would be just enough, with Horry Post 111 holding off a late threat to pull out a 2-1 win.
The local American Legion ball club will next take on either Florence Post 1 or Inman Post 45.
Jim Cagle got the rally started after being hit by a pitch, with a base hit by Austin Cartrette moving him up a station to second base.
The two of them would advance to second and third as a result of a wild pitch, setting the stage for Panos’ heroics.
Starter Austin Cox was masterful for Horry Post 111, who left after seven innings without giving up a run. He gave up five hits.
Hayden Franklin came in to sew things up for the local club, getting the final six outs for the save. He ceded a run on two hits.
