Bishop England continues to vex Waccamaw, sweeps Warriors from playoffs

At this point, Waccamaw volleyball coach Jill Schoen will take whatever advice one is willing to give, as long as it helps her team get past Bishop England.

During each of her five previous seasons at the school, the two teams collided in the playoffs — all with Bishop England coming out on top.

The Warriors would get another shot at their longtime nemesis, the Battling Bishops paying a visit to the Grand Strand with a trip to the Lower State title match on the line.

Unfortunately for Waccamaw, this one ended with an all too familiar result.

Whether it be jitters the result of the moment’s vastness or the team across the net, the Warriors proved to be their worst enemy in a 3-0 loss (25-12, 25-6, 25-6) loss to Bishop England.

Seeking their 17th straight volleyball title, the margin for error against the Battling Bishops was already slim. However, Schoen doesn’t believe her team did itself any favors.

“It was a game of errors,” she said. “We came in intimidated. They were a big team, arch-rival, and we played that way, we played shy all night. It was all us playing defense, rarely got our offense together and we just crumbled … saw them and crumbled.”

Sarah Krask led the team with three kills, while several other Waccamaw players offered two of their own.

Though a state title was the goal, Schoen said it does little to diminish what the team accomplished this season.

“It was a great season, won (Region VI-3A) and finished 17-7, 9-1 in the region,” she said. “This group of seniors was absolutely amazing.”
