Area volleyball, golf standouts receive awards, accolades
With postseason play set to begin, it also means it is awards season for a number of sports.
Among them is Region VII-4A, which on Tuesday recognized its top performers from the 2016 campaign.
Myrtle Beach placed two on the first team, middle hitter Cassie Runyon and outside hitter Gracie Davis getting the all-region nod. A pair of St. James volleyball standouts also were on the first team, as libero Skyler Campbell and setter Mallory Farmer made the cut. North Myrtle Beach’s Maddie Roy rounded out Region VII-4A’s first team.
Making the all-Region VII-4A second team were Maggie Hash and Kaydee Runion of North Myrtle Beach, Skyla Corey and Rebecca Orteaga of St. James, and Darby Sheets of Myrtle Beach.
Earning honorable mention were Myrtle Beach’s Dani Hix, Sydney Bellamy of North Myrtle Beach, Casma Washington and Abby Catoe of Wilson, in addition to Heather Lindasher and Lauren Marcum of Marlboro County.
Three Grand Strand golfers earn North-South distinction
The Grand Strand will be well represented next month when 16 of the top girls golfers from around the Palmetto State gather at Timberlake Golf Club in Chapin for the North-South Girls Golf Tournament.
Myrtle Beach’s Boni Belle Brooks, Conway’s Kendall Lewis and Carolina Forest’s Jacki Brown will join five other players on the South squad. Aynor girls golf coach Patrick Wilkinson will serve as the team’s coach.
The event will take place Nov. 11 and 12.
