Weekly golf tip with Brad Redding (Nov. 22, 2016)

Digital level

Most golfers exclusively use their eyes to determine the break on a putt. While that’s most common, a new method of reading the break on a putt is catching on. It is called “Aim Point” and it is where you use your feet to feel the slope. You might have seen Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Stacy Lewis holding their fingers. This is done after they have found the break using their feet. They will base the break on a scale of 1 to 5 and sometimes even more. So they will hold their fingers up on what they felt the slope to be.

I use a digital level to help my students develop their ability to determine slope. After they have determined the slope I will put the level in line with their putt halfway from the ball to the hole. The level will give a reading and they can see how they compare with the level. Greens don’t always break toward water and away from mountains.

If you have an issue with your golf game, Brad Redding is fielding reader questions at brad@bradreddinggolf.com and will provide answers directly and in future tips.
