Germany’s Schneider, China’s Yu claim AJGA titles at Barefoot Resort

Jan Schneider of Erlangen, Germany, shot a tournament-low 5-under-par 66 Thursday to win the boys division of the American Junior Golf Association’s Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy Junior Championship on Barefoot Resort’s Norman Course.

Schneider’s even-par 213 total was three strokes better than runner-up Conor McGrath of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., as the top six finishers were from different countries or states.

China native SiQin Yu of Bradenton, Fla., won the girls division by three strokes over Kendall Griffin of Sebring, Fla., with a final-round 70 for a 3-over 216 total. The AJGA win is the second for Yu, who won the 2015 Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Sugarloaf. Griffin has eleven AJGA top-20 finishes and has verbally committed to play collegiately at Louisiana State University.

In the boys division, Holden Grigg of Myrtle Beach tied for 12th at 79-71-74–224, McClure Thompson of Little River tied for 30th at 74-77-81–232, Keegan Vaugh of Myrtle Beach tied for 41st at 78-86-75–239, and Sam Shostek of Myrtle Beach tied for 47th at 85-85-74–244.

In the girls division, Madison Elliott of Little River finished 16th at 78-78-80–236 and Sydney Abruzzino of Myrtle Beach finished 20th at 84-88-83–255.

Knaffle misses cut

RUMFORD, R.I. Smith Knaffle of Murrells Inlet missed the cut Thursday by six strokes to the low 30 players for the final round of the 41st Junior PGA Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club with a two-round total of 11-over 76-77–153. Wednesday’s second round was washed out by inclement weather.

The 15-year-old qualified for the PGA of America’s national junior championship by winning the Carolinas PGA Junior Championship at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina in late June.

Mariel Galdiano of Hawaii leads the tournament by three strokes at 11-under 131 over second-place Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C.
