Kelly Mitchum, a teaching professional at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C., shot a 3-under-par 69 Tuesday to win the Carolinas PGA Head Professional Championship by three strokes over Pinehurst No. 9 head pro Matt Vick with a 5-under 139 at Wexford Plantation.
Mitchum earned an exemption into the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage with his round Monday, and the Wells Fargo Championship by winning on Tuesday, for which he collected $1,700. He has played in 23 previous PGA Tour events, making five cuts.
Ryan Tyndall of The Reserve Club in Pawleys Island finished eighth at 4-over 74-74–148 to earn $600, Dale Ketola of Potential Golf at Farmstead Golf Links in Little River tied for ninth at 76-73–149 to earn $505, Chuck Johns of the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina tied for 20th at 74-80–154 and Phil Smiley of Carolina National Golf Club in Bolivia, N.C., tied for 32nd at 75-81–156.
The South Carolina Golf Center at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club is hosting a free golf demo day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Participating companies include Cobra Puma Golf, Callaway and TaylorMade, and refreshments will be available to all participants. Certified TPI fitness trainer Daniel Hadden will also be giving free fitness screenings.
