Hackler wins S.C. Golf Association major super senior event

Joe Hackler of Myrtle Beach won the ninth annual Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Florence Country Club, shooting a 2-over 73 in Wednesday’s final round to finish a stroke ahead of Aiken’s John Laehn at 5-over 147.

Hackler began the final round two shots out of the lead, carded an even-par 35 on the front nine with birdies on holes 5, 6 and 9, then had a birdie, bogey and double bogey on the back.

Three-time SCGA Super Senior Champion Bob Stringer was third at 150. Bruce Beck of Myrtle Beach shot 157, Bob Zuercher of Pawleys Island and Don Sheads of Murrells Inlet shot 158, Rich Agle of Conway shot 161, and Al Edwards of North Myrtle Beach and Randy Allen of Myrtle Beach shot 162.

In the Legends Division, Hartsville’s Paul Davies won by a stroke over Jerry Woodruff of Greenville with a 150. The tournament is one of 21 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and attracted 65 players ages 65 and older.

Dale Ketola of Little River and Potential Golf at Farmstead Golf Links fell 2 and 1 to Kelly Mitchum of Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort on Wednesday in the first round of the inaugural OMEGA CPGA Match Play Championship.

Carolinas PGA Section members qualified for the competition at Daniel Island Club's Ralston Creek Course through their play at 2015 CPGA major championships. Mitchum, Wake Forest golf coach Jerry Haas, Cory Schneider of The Pointe Golf Club in Harbinger, N.C., and Julien Bland of The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem all advanced to the semifinals.
