Weekly golf tip with Brad Redding (Sept. 8)
Slicer solutions: Right motion
If you are trying to swing the club toward your target you are not using the club the way it is designed because you are swinging as if golf is an “in-line” motion. Croquet, darts and billiards are all games that use in-line motion because you are in line with the target; the mallet, dart and pool cue are designed to move in a straight line.
The golf swing is a “side-on” motion. The ball is on the ground but also to the side of you. Your swing would be moving right in the down swing, square at impact and back to the left on the through swing. To feel this to the right motion, place a box on your target line. Make rehearsal swings where the club swings right of the box. This is the feeling you want as it will allow you to close the club face and get the axis spin on the ball to tilt left.
