Allwood wins CPGA Assistant Championship

Rohan Allwood of Blythewood and Woodlands Country Club in Columbia shot an 8-under-par 69-67–136 to win the National Car Rental Carolinas PGA Assistant Championship at Cabarrus Country Club on Tuesday.

Allwood leads seven players from the tournament as qualifiers for the 38th PGA Assistant Championship from Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The other qualifiers, who all shot 2-under 142 or better, are Luke McClellan of Charleston, Jeff Wells of Redondo Beach, Calif., Ray Frantz of Mount Pleasant, Troy Spencer of Chesterfield, Travis Cashion of Bluffton and Nick Cannon of Cashiers, N.C.

Derek Watson of Myrtle Beach and Coast 2 Coast Golf tied for 21st at 73-74–147 and Christopher Bolin of Myrtle Beach and The Reserve Club tied for 70th at 80-84–164.

Golden, Knaffle in contention at Beth Daniel

Murrells Inlet residents Patrick Golden and Smith Knaffle are both within four shots of the lead in their respective divisions after the first round of the 36-hole Beth Daniel Junior Azalea at the Country Club of Charleston.

Golden shot a 1-over 72 Tuesday and is tied for 11th and four shots behind boys division leader Kent Lawrence of Charleston, and Knaffle shot a 3-over 74 and is four behind girls division leader Kate Harper of Isle of Palms. Madison Elliott of North Myrtle Beach is 21st after a 79 and Kelli Smith of Murrells Inlet is 29th after an 83. The final round is Wednesday.

Murrells Inlet’s Long, partner win Four-Ball title

John Long of Murrells Inlet teamed with Bob Albus of Kiawah Island to win a Carolinas Golf Association Senior Four-Ball One-Day Tournament with a gross 65 at Indian Wells Golf Club. Dan Harrington Jr. of Pawleys Island and Jamie Frazier of Winnsboro finished third with a 71.

In the Super Senior Division for players 65 and older, Eddie Myers of Little River and partner Rick Mitchell of Myrtle Beach won with a 68, which was two strokes better than runners-up Lanny Correll Sr. of Pawleys Island and Steve Denney of Shallotte, N.C.
