North Myrtle Beach native returns to golf broadcasting, hopes it’s “like riding a bike”
North Myrtle Beach native Kelly Tilghman is returning to televised golf next week after being away from the business for more than two years.
Tilghman announced that she is joining CBS Sports for coverage of the year’s first major tournament, the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
She will host the PGA Championship Clubhouse Report on CBS Sports Network next week, which is a wrap-up and highlights show that will air after each of the tournament’s four rounds.
“I’m excited to see many of my longtime friends and feel the rush of television again,” Tilghman told The Sun News. “The goal is to be informative, have fun with the team and reconnect with golf’s great fans.”
Tilghman ended a 22-year groundbreaking career at Golf Channel in March 2018. Her many duties at the network she helped grow included becoming the first full-time female play-by-play announcer for PGA Tour tournaments.
Tilghman left Golf Channel in part to spend more time raising her daughter, Ryan, and has been heavily involved in golf-related charity efforts on the Grand Strand. They include the Gene’s Dream Foundation that she helped create in 2017 in honor of late longtime Strand golf professional Gene Weldon, who was a mentor to her growing up, the Mentor Cup for junior golfers and mentors, and The First Tee of Coastal Carolinas youth golf and development organization.
Tilghman did not indicate if she would continue in television beyond next week.
