Tournament golf is back in the Carolinas. See who held tournaments and who won this week
Tournament golf returned to the Carolinas this week, as the Carolinas PGA Section, South Carolina Golf Association and Women’s South Carolina Golf Association all held events.
The PGA Tour will even be making an appearance next week.
The governing bodies of golf in the two states, including the Carolinas Golf Association, put tournaments on hold in late March.
The SCGA event – the 62nd S.C. Junior Championship – was held at Tradition Golf Club in Pawleys Island from Monday through Wednesday. It was won by Trey Crenshaw of Lancaster, who finished a shot ahead of runner-up Waymon Thomas of Mount Pleasant with a 9-under 67-71-69–207.
Crenshaw began the final round a shot back, birdied three straight holes on the back nine and took advantage of two late bogeys by Thomas. Conner Thomas of Conway, who shot a 69 in the opening round, tied for 40th at 224 and Braeden Barnett of Galivants Ferry tied for 18th at 1-over 217.
The top eight finishers qualified for the 45th Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches: Crenshaw, Thomas, Jerry Bruns (Beaufort), Luke Walmet (Mt. Pleasant), Griffin Tarver (Tega Cay), William Jennings (Greenville), Eric Nord (Blythewood) and Jonathan Brennan (Taylors). The Matches are scheduled for July 31-Aug. 1 at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia.
Kelly Mitchum of Pinehurst, N.C., won the CPGA’s 56th Mobipaid North Carolina Open on Tuesday at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C., shooting a 10-under 132 to defeat amateur Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C., by two strokes. Ryan Tyndall of The Reserve Club in Pawleys Island and amateur Christopher White of Pawleys Island were among those tied for 16th at 1-under 141.
The WSCGA’s 72nd women’s state amateur at Columbia Country Club was won by Anna Morgan of Spartanburg in a sudden-death playoff over Savannah Hylton of Spartanburg after both shot three-round totals of even-par 216.
Smith Knaffle of Murrells Inlet, who recently completed her freshman year at the University of South Carolina, tied for sixth at 3-over 75-70-64–219, junior Mia Gray of Conway tied for eighth at 5-over 73-73-74–221 and Coastal Carolina rising senior Frantiska Lunackova of the Czech Republic at 6-over 76-74-72–222.
The PGA Tour returns to South Carolina next week with the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island. The tournament is not selling tickets and will be played without spectators, other than what is expected to be throngs of people who will watch from homes and condos – many rented for the week – that line many holes in the midst of large live oak trees along the course.
There will likely be many watching from boats along Calibogue Sound to the right of the 18th hole as well.
