The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is hosting the 57th annual South Carolina Junior Championship from Tuesday through Thursday.

The par-72 course will be set up to play approximately 6,730 yards for the South Carolina Golf Association event, and a field of 135 players attempting to win the Charlie Rountree Trophy includes about 20 Grand Strand residents.

They include Jackson Cole of Pawleys Island, Vijay Mishra of North Myrtle Beach, Kevin Burris of Conway, Patrick Golden and Will Canipe of Murrells Inlet, Matthew Griego of Loris, Maxwell Roberts of Galivants Ferry and Myrtle Beach residents William Monckton, Nathan Bazant, Kohler Karavan and Karsten Kenley.

Though only a rising freshman at Myrtle Beach High, Holden Grigg is coming off a tie for fourth in the Creed Junior Boys Invitational at Camden Country Club in May and has a home course advantage as a Dunes Club member.

Tournament favorites include defending champion Jack Parrott of Columbia, a South Carolina commitment who hopes to become the first successful defending champ since Tommy Biersehenk Jr. in 1990-91. Christian Salzer of Sumter, who lost to Parrott in a playoff last year and won the Jimmy Anderson in March, is also in the field, as is 2014 third-place finisher Jordan Warnock of Roebuck.

Also in the field are U.S. Junior qualifier Logan Sowell of Kershaw, Cobbs Glen Junior reigning champ Patrick Talledo of Blythewood, consistent SCJGA events contender Christian Baliker of Simpsonville, 2014 S.C. Junior Match Play champion R.J. Bartolomucci of Hilton Head Island, and brothers Alec and Drew Weary of Bluffton, who won the two oldest boys division of the Players Championship last November in Hartsville.

Tee times are both morning and afternoon in the first two rounds and in the morning for Thursday’s final round. The tournament is open and free for spectators.

The top eight finishers will qualify for the 40th South Carolina-Georgia Team Matches from July 24-25 at Berkeley Hall Plantation in Bluffton.

Past S.C. Junior champions include Charlie Rymer, Lucas Glover, Matt Hendrix and Mark Anderson.
