La Stella wins CWS bet, teammate Arrieta forced to get CCU tattoo
Infielder Tommy La Stella left the visitor’s clubhouse at Marlins Park on Sunday morning shortly before Jake Arrieta arrived to see a Coastal Carolina placard taped to the top of Arrieta’s locker.
The sign was a reminder of Coastal Carolina’s win Saturday that eliminated Texas Christian from the College World Series and served as a reminder to Arrieta that lost a bet featuring both players’ alma maters to La Stella.
Before leaving to start his minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Iowa, La Stella said Arrieta will make good on his bet by getting a tattoo of Coastal Carolina when the Cubs finally return from their 11-game trip next week.
“So happy for those kids,” La Stella told ESPN. “When we get back to Chicago we’ll get him [Arrieta] tatted up for life.”
Arrieta, who was bothered by sinus congestion, said that he would get a blacklight tattoo so that the letters “CCU” wouldn’t be noticeable without a blacklight lamp.
As for the placard, Arrieta quickly removed it from his locker when he arrived.
La Stella, who hasn’t played since injuring his right hamstring, will be accompanied by left-handed reliever Clayton Richard on his rehab assignment. La Stella could rejoin the Cubs as soon as Thursday against the New York Mets, while Richard (blister on left middle finger) isn’t eligible to return until July 6.
