Matchup Preview: Coastal Carolina vs. Campbell
Who: Campbell at Coastal Carolina
Where: The HTC Center, Conway
When: 2 p.m. Satuday
About the Chanticleers (12-8, 6-4): Coastal Carolina is playing its best basketball of the season and has surged to within one game of the Big South lead while riding a four-game winning streak. The Chants, who are tied for fourth in the conference behind co-leaders High Point, UNC Asheville and Winthrop, will look to extend that run against a team they lost to back in late November. Campbell won the teams’ Big South opener 79-73 in Buies Creek, N.C., but the Fighting Camels have mostly struggled since then. The key for Coastal Carolina will be continuing to adjust to the loss of senior forward Marcus Freeman, a a significant frontcourt cog in the rotation who is out two to four weeks with a foot sprain. Overall, the Chants have won four of the last five meetings with Campbell.
About the Fighting Camels (8-12, 2-8): Campbell has lost its last seven games while plummeting to the bottom of the Big South standings. Freshman guard Chris Clemons leads the team in scoring at 18.0 points per game – fourth-best in the league – and averages 3.4 3-pointers per game. But overall, offense has been a problem for the Fighting Camels. In conference play, they rank 10th out of 11 Big South teams in scoring at 67.3 points per game and ninth defensively while giving up an average of 73.9. They are also getting outrebounded by an average of 7.3 boards per game in league play.
