Chants’ Ross earns All-American honor
Coastal Carolina quarterback Alex Ross added one more impressive feat to his lengthy collegiate resume Monday while being named to the 25-man American Football Coaches Association FCS All-American team.
The AFCA team is chosen by FCS coaches and selects only one player per position with 11 on offense, 11 on defense and three specialists.
The organization has been honoring players since 1945, and Ross is the fourth Chanticleer to make this particular All-American team along with fellow former quarterback Tyler Thigpen (2006), cornerback Josh Norman (2011) and offensive lineman Chad Hamilton (2014).
“It means a lot. I think it’s definitely something to be proud of and I’m definitely proud of it, but that means nothing to me if I can’t go on and play at the next level,” Ross said. “That’s my ultimately goal, that’s what I want to do, but to look back and say that I accomplished [this], that’s something I’ll cherish.”
Ross led the Big South in a slew of offensive categories as a senior while passing for 3,009 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions and rushing for 209 yards and three scores.
He is the conference’s all-time leader in total offense (11,482 yards) and also leaves Coastal Carolina with program records for pass attempts (1,174), pass completions (760), passing yards (9,918), passing touchdowns (72), pass completion percentage (.647) and pass efficiency (151.8).
As he said, Ross is hoping to land an opportunity with an NFL team this spring. He is still finalizing where he’ll do his offseason training and whether he’ll take part in any senior showcase games.
Ross joins two teammates in receiving FCS All-American honors this year as junior running back De’Angelo Henderson was a STATS second-team FCS All-American selection and an Associated Press third-team FCS All-America pick and junior kick returner Devin Brown was a third-team selection by STATS.
