Henderson, Brown earn All-American status for CCU
The parade of postseason awards is underway and on Tuesday two Coastal Carolina football players received FCS All-American status from STATS.
Running back De’Angelo Henderson was selected as a second-team All-American by STATS while kick returner Devin Brown made third team.
Neither comes as any surprise, of course.
Henderson was the 2015 Big South Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for national offensive player of the year honors after another prodigious season. He was the only FCS running back to total at least 1,000 rushing yards (1,346) and at least 400 receiving yards (403), totaled 19 touchdowns in 12 games and established an FCS record streak of 26 straight games with a touchdown dating back to 2014.
The STATS FCS All-American first-team running backs were Illinois State senior Marshaun Coprich (1,967 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns in 13 games), Fordham sophomore Chase Edmonds (1,648 rushing yards, 20 TDs in 12 games) and Lamar junior Kade Harrington (FCS-leading 2,092 rushing yards, 21 TDs in 11 games), while Henderson shared second-team billing with Richmond senior Jacobi Green (1,563 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns in 13 games).
Brown, the Big South Special Teams Player of the Year, had two kick returns for touchdown in the first three games this season before opposing teams started kicking away from him most of the time. He ranks seventh in the FCS this fall in averaging 28.6 yards per kickoff return, and he has five career kick return touchdowns to move one shy of the FCS all-time record.
Henderson announced Monday he’ll be returning for his senior season next fall, after briefly considering the option of transferring to a bigger FBS program or declaring for the NFL Draft, and Brown is also expected back as a senior.
Coastal Carolina has now had 22 football All-Americans of some kind since starting the program in 2003, including at least one in 11 of the Chants’ 13 seasons.
