CCU Basketball Preview: Chants host Radford in Big South clash
Who: Radford at Coastal Carolina
Where: The HTC Center, Conway
When: 2 p.m. Sunday
About the Chanticleers (3-4, 0-1 Big South): Coastal Carolina had a very encouraging second half Wednesday against Auburn, trimming an 18-point deficit to 1 over the final 10 minutes before ultimately losing 81-78. The Chants still have just one win over a Division I opponent, but they showed a lot of potential in that loss to the Tigers. Junior guard Elijah Wilson was nearly unstoppable down the stretch on his way to a 25-point night and he leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game. Coach Cliff Ellis wants to see his supporting cast pick up more of the offensive burden, though. That’s a key for the Chants moving forward.
About the Highlanders (5-3, 1-0): Radford enters this Big South showdown after a strong start to the season, including wins over Georgetown and Penn State. That said, the Highlanders narrowly got past Liberty – expected to be the worst team in the conference –with a 56-52 win in their last game. Senior guard Rashun Davis leads the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game. The Highlanders are really dependent on Davis, senior guard Cameron Jones (11.4 points per game) and freshman forward Ed Polite Jr. (10.3) as no other player on the roster is averaging even 6 points per game.
