How to watch Coastal Carolina vs. Arizona in College World Series opener
Kevin Schnall’s life changed forever on June 30, 2016.
That was the day Coastal Carolina’s baseball team won Game 3 of the College World Series championship series against Arizona and clinched its first national title.
Schnall, an assistant coach on that Gary Gilmore-led team, still remembers the joyful dogpile at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska as the Chanticleers became the first team to win the CWS in their debut appearance since Minnesota in 1956.
“As you can imagine, that moment, that day, that team changed Coastal baseball forever,” Schnall said. “Quite frankly, changed my life, my family’s life forever.”
Now, the Chants are back in Omaha with Schnall as their coach, going for another national title. Here’s how to watch Coastal’s first game and what else to know.

How does the CWS bracket work?
The College World Series features eight teams split into two double-elimination brackets: Bracket 1 and Bracket 2. Coastal Carolina and Arizona are in Bracket 1. The other two teams in Bracket 1, No. 8 Oregon State and Louisville, play Friday at 7 p.m.
After a day off, the loser of Coastal Carolina-Arizona will play the loser of Oregon State-Louisville on Sunday (2 p.m., ESPN), while the Coastal-Arizona winner plays the Oregon State-Louisville winner on Sunday at 6 p.m. (ESPN).
Bracket 2 features Arkansas, LSU, UCLA and Murray State. Those teams play their opening games Saturday, with winners and losers playing Monday.
The eventual Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 winners will play a best-of-three College World Series champion series starting Saturday, June 21.
How did Coastal Carolina get here?
Coastal Carolina earned the No. 13 overall seed in the NCAA tournament field and regional hosting privileges after finishing 48-11 in the regular season under first-year coach Schnall (who replaced Gilmore when he retired last summer). CCU also swept the Sun Belt’s regular-season and tournament championships.
Coastal Carolina — located in Conway, South Carolina just outside Myrtle Beach – swept its home regional, beating Fairfield and East Carolina twice. The Chants then swept No. 4 national seed Auburn on the road in the super regionals.
The Chanticleers enter the College World Series on a nation-best 23-game win streak. Coastal boasts the second-best team ERA in the country (3.21), and junior catcher Caden Bodine (.332 batting average, 75 hits) is MLB.com’s No. 38 draft prospect.
Scouting the Arizona Wildcats
The Wildcats are making their 19th CWS appearance (tied for the eighth most nationally) but their first since 2016, when they lost to Coastal in the championship.
Arizona won the Big 12 tournament title and was the No. 2 seed in No. 12 overall seed Oregon’s regional. The Wildcats swept that regional (avoiding top seed Oregon, which was eliminated early) and won back-to-back elimination games against No. 5 UNC in Chapel Hill to reach the College World Series.
That was an impressive rally, considering UNC walloped Arizona 18-2 in Game 1.
ESPN ranks Wildcats right fielder Brendan Summerhill as its No. 27 draft prospect.
