Coastal Carolina

Marshall tried to distract Coastal Carolina with a meme from The Office. Did it work?

Marshall University got creative in trying to stop its Sun Belt Conference rival, Coastal Carolina, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

The Thundering Herd even resorted to deploying memes to distract CCU field-goal kickers. Marshall used a photo of Michael Scott— the main character of the hit TV show The Office — with a glum look. The word ‘NO’ also appeared next to Scott’s face on the jumbotron.

The image comes from an episode where Scott undergoes one-on-one counseling with his least favorite colleague — Dunder Mifflin, human resources representative Toby Flenderson.

Marshall used the image both times CCU kicker Kade Hensley lined up to secure the Chants three points. Thundering Herd defenders blocked Hensley’s first kick and returned it for a touchdown. Hensley’s second effort was good from 46 yards.

For years, college football teams have used jumbotrons to distract opposing teams. Coastal Carolina also experimented with these tactics during home games at Brooks Stadium in 2024. Against the University of Virginia, three chickens stared at the Cavalier kicker from CCU’s jumbotron during a UVA attempt.

Like Marshall’s gambit, CCU’s trick proved unsuccessful.
