See CCU fans ‘storming the field’ after the win against App State. Will there be a fine?
Coastal Carolina fans were ready to celebrate after besting rival program Appalachian State 38-24 and they stormed the field.
CCU had loss three straight, and the student section took the opportunity to celebrate Coastal’s third win in a row versus the Mountaineers. Many of the students jumped down from their seating section and stormed the Brooks Stadium teal field to celebrate the win, with ESPN covering the festivities.
However, it’s unclear if the demonstration will cost CCU financially. Several NCAA conferences have penalties for home teams if their fans to storm the area of play after a game. Storming the field or court has also recently been scrutinized for negative interactions between players and fans. The SEC fined the University of South Carolina after Gamecock supporters stormed Williams-Brice Stadium following USC’s win versus Texas A&M.
CCU plays in the Sun Belt Conference. SBC Senior Associate Commissioner, Chief Communications & Branding Officer Sam Knehans did not return a request for comment before publication. A Coastal Carolina spokesperson also did not return a request for comment before publication.
According to a 2020 copy of the SBC’s football regulations, field storming is not expressly banned. A Coastal Carolina fan gameday guide from 2022 states that students shouldn’t go on the field of play but doesn’t lay out any punishments for doing so. It’s unclear if this 2022 fan guide is up-to-date.
CCU fans stormed the teal field following Coastal’s victory over the Mountaineers in 2022. At the time, WBTW reported that Coastal was not fined for the fan celebration.
