Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall has entered the transfer portal, leaving newly minted head coach Tim Beck without a veteran field general heading into the 2022-23 season

McCall, 21, announced on Twitter just before 3 p.m.

“It has been an absolute honor to the quarterback at Coastal Carolina for the past three seasons. I have enjoyed it more than anything, and I’ll never forget what it was like,” he wrote on Twitter, next to an image of him in the team’s teal-and-black jerseys. “Putting on that teal jersey is a special feeling I never took for granted.”

McCall leaves as CCU’s all-time touchdown leader with 78, and also has more than 8,000 passing yards. McCall said he plans to stay under center for the Chanticleers’ Dec. 27 bowl game against East Carolina.

Recruited out of Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, N.C., McCall spent his CCU under with Jamey Chadwell, who recently departed CCU for Liberty University. Beck was announced as his replacement on Dec. 5.

McCall leaves Conway as one of the most dominant Group of Five players in the nation. The RealMcCall.com, a fan website that tracks his statistics and accomplishments, is attached to CCU football’s home page.

  • This past season, his 24 touchdown passes put him among the top 30 FBS quarterbacks in America.
  • He completed 69.1% of his pass attempts this past season, ranking seventh nationally
  • He’s a three-time Sun Belt Conference player of the year
  • Broke the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision record for passing efficiency at 207.6, putting him ahead of now NFL starters Joe Burrow and Mac Jones
  • Responsible for the longest pass in CCU history when he connected on a 99-yard pass to Isaiah Likely against Arkansas St. in 2021

McCall is the seventh Chanticleer to enter the transfer portal since Beck’s hire, according to tracking site 247Sports.com

Beck said during his introductory press conference he had mixed feeling about the transfer portal, which he called a “four-letter word” for coaches.

“My advice, and I talked to the team a little bit, if you’re looking to get into the transfer portal, I hope you have a place to go, because it is extremely crowded,” he said Dec. 5. “I think young men today think if things aren’t going right or there’s some changes, they want to get in that and create a new start..unfortunately, college coaches don’t view it as that.”

In addition to his on-field play, McCall was known for his exuberance, famously saying in September he urinates a particular shade of blue while announcing his return to CCU.

“I am coming back to play another year of college football and it will be in Conway, South Carolina,” McCall tweeted on Dec. 21, 2021. “When I say I p*** teal, I mean it. One last ride baby! Let’s do it! Chants forever.”
