Coastal Carolina continues to push the envelope with its post-game celebrations.

CCU’s theme established by the coaching staff for this week’s game against Texas State was being a hungry team and “devouring” the opponent, and the Chanticleers had the perfect guest for the locker room revelry.

The Chanticleers celebrated a 35-21 win Saturday at Brooks Stadium with a pizza eating contest featuring world competitive eating champion Joey Chestnut.

Joey “Jaws” took on super seniors Silas Kelly, Trey Carter and Charles Ouverson in a two-minute inhalation of the Italian treat.

So who won?

“You couldn’t have combined our other three guys and eaten what he did in two minutes,” CCU coach Jamey Chadwell said. “It was pretty sweet though.”

Chestnut was contacted through a friend in the media about attending the game and taking part in something with the team.

Chestnut said he was pushed a bit in the competition.

“Kelly, that guy’s an eater. He’s definitely the best eater on the team but I still put him down,” Chestnut said. “I almost finished the whole pizza, but it had been sitting out a little bit and the crust was a little rough.”

Chestnut said he didn’t taunt the Chants following his win. “They are big boys,” he said.

The Chants have a weekly game theme that is often related to the opposition, and a hashtag that Texas State features on Twitter is #EatEmUp. The Coastal football Twitter page posted the two-minute locker room video with the description: Ate Em Up with @joeyjaws

The CCU eating celebration featured director of player personnel Colton Korn emulating July 4 Nathan’s Hot Dog contest host George Shea.

“It was real electric, seeing all the guys getting into it,” super senior defensive lineman C.J. Brewer said. “It was real crazy in the locker room right after the game seeing him, Silas, Trey and Charles Ouverson just having fun after a great ‘W’ with the team. It was real fun and funny.”
