Coastal Carolina football adds old conference foe as it continues to restructure schedule
Coastal Carolina continues to restructure its 2020 football schedule.
The Chanticleers now have two non-conference opponents and 10 total games, as they will play former Big South rival Liberty on Dec. 5.
CCU had all four of its originally scheduled non-conference games canceled because of concerns over the spread of the coronairus, but it has replaced two and continues to seek opponents for its other open dates.
The Chants rescheduled a canceled home game on Sept. 26 against Kansas with a game at the Jayhawks on Sept. 12. The teams are exchanging home games, so Kansas will travel to Conway for a game Sept. 11, 2021 and become the first team from a Power 5 conference to play at Brooks Stadium.
The Sun Belt Conference announced earlier this month it intends to play an eight-game conference schedule this fall, though the dates of the games have not been released, and is allowing its members to play up to four non-conference games.
In addition to the Kansas game, the Chants had games canceled that were scheduled against South Carolina of the Southeastern Conference on Sept. 5, Eastern Michigan of the Mid-American Conference on Sept. 12, and FCS member Duquesne on Sept. 19.
The SEC limited its teams to 10 conference games, the MAC postponed its football season and intends to play in the spring, and Duquesne opted against playing as an independent when its league, the Northeast Conference, indefinitely suspended all fall athletic competitions.
Liberty in an FBS independent. The Flames began a transition from FCS in July 2017, became a provisional FBS member in 2018, and became a full FBS member with bowl eligibility in 2019.
The Dec. 5 contest is scheduled to be CCU’s final regular season game. It will be the 15th meeting between the two teams, and the overall series is tied 7-7 with Coastal taking the last meeting 42-7 at home on Nov. 17, 2016.
As Coastal and some other programs scramble for games predominantly in mid- to late September, the entire fall college football season is in peril because of COVID-19.
At the FBS level, Power 5 conferences the Pac-12 and Big 10 have postponed their seasons with the intention of playing in the fall, as have Group of Five conferences the MAC and Mountain West. The Big 12, ACC and SEC have all released schedules with one or no non-conference games permitted, and Conference USA, the Sun Belt and American Athletic conferences announced they are allowing full 12-game schedules if their teams can find opponents.
