Coastal Carolina

This Coastal Carolina standout is getting a chance in the NFL with the New York Jets

Though no Coastal Carolina football players heard their name called in the NFL Draft over the weekend, one is getting a chance to prove he belongs in the league.

Chanticleers defensive tackle Sterling Johnson signed a free agent deal with the New York Jets on Saturday night.

Johnson, who spent three years at Clemson before transferring to CCU, was an All-Sun Belt third team member in 2019 after recording 41 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss — good for ninth in the Sun Belt — and 3.5 sacks in 11 games. In his second season at Coastal, the 6-foot-4, 285-pounder transitioned to nose tackle as the Chants’ incorporated a new 3-4 scheme.

In two years at CCU, the Clayton, North Carolina native recorded 65 total tackles, including 24 solo stops, in 23 games. Johnson also had 15.5 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks while breaking up two passes and blocking two kicks.

Johnson played sparingly in 11 games while at Clemson and was a member of the 2016 national championship team.
