Friday’s area sports briefs

Coastal Carolina’s Lena Schaeffner struggled in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships on Friday, firing a 11-over 83.

Schaeffner, who qualified for the event as an individual, was tied for 118th at The Concessions Golf Club.

▪ Eleven Coastal Carolina track and field athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round to be held May 28-30 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

The men’s and women’s teams had five individual qualifiers each and the men’s 400-meter relay team – Alexander Hass, Therius Styles, Kahlim Denmark and DeAndra Lipscomb – also will compete.

Jessica Gelibert (100- and 400-meter hurdles), Christina Davis (400m hurdles), Letitia Saayman (10,000m), Amirah Al-Bayyinah (triple jump, javelin) and Chloe White (triple jump, javelin) qualified on the women’s side.

Reggie Nelson (high jump), Hass (100m, 200m), Denmark (100m), Styles (200m) and Desmond Wallace (110m hurdles) qualified on the men’s side.
