Saturday’s area sports briefs

The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track and field teams both posted runner-up finishes in the Big South Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

The women’s team came up 11 1/2 points short of Liberty, while the Flames’ men’s team ran away with the title.

“A couple things just didn’t go our way today,” CCU coach Jeff Jacobs said. “But I’m proud of the way we competed. Liberty just outperformed us today.”

Four Chanticleers earned individual victories and three relay teams came away with titles.

On the women’s side, Letitia Saayman won the 5,000 meters in a meet- and stadium-record 16:51.56, her second victory of the meet, and Jessica Gelibert won the 400-meter hurdles (58.15) for the third straight time.

Coastal’s women’s 1,600-meter relay team – Christal Green, Camille Hurley, Teka Simpson and Jessica Gelibert – won in a meet- and stadium-record 3:38.66.

On the men’s side, Desmond Wallace won the 110-meter hurdles in school- and stadium-record time of 13.80 and Alexander Hass won the 200 meters (21.53).

CCU’s men’s 400-meter relay team – Kahlim Denmark, Alexander Hass, DeAndra Lipscomb and Therius Styles – won in a stadium-record time of 40.26. The 1,600-meter relay team – Jerome Coaxum Jr., Hass, Steve Carr and Lipscomb – won in 3:12.53.

“We truly had some great individual performances,” Jacobs said.

Other CCU men with top-10s: Ryan Minor (hammer throw, second, 184-9); Carrington Fernandors (110m hurdles, second, second, 52.20); Alexander Hass (400m, second, 48.04); DeAndra Lipscomb (400m, third, 48.29); Steve Carr (400m, fourth, 49.03); Kahlim Denmark (200m, third, 21.75; 100m, second, school-record 10.47); Therius Styles (100m, third, 10.59); and Derrick Kinloch Jr. (triple jump, fourth, school-record 49-7).

College baseball

▪ ▪ Coastal Carolina 11, (at) Campbell 3 | Michael Paez drove in four runs and the Chants avoided a sweep in their regular-season finale.

G.K. Young drove in a pair for Coastal, which opens the Big South tournament Tuesday.

Clemson 9, (at) Florida State 6 | Reed Rohlman tied a school record with three doubles and Jake Long allowed one run on four hits in six innings to lead the Tigers to a series sweep.

CCU men’s golf

▪  Coastal Carolina’s Ben Wheeler shot a final-round even-par 72 to finish tied for 49th (221) and Andrew Dorn fired an 80 to finish tied for 63rd (226) in the NCAA East Regional.

Neither qualified for the NCAA Championships.
