Indianapolis Colts sign former Coastal Carolina receiver for second time this month
Former Coastal Carolina wide receiver Matt Hazel is getting a second opportunity with the Indianapolis Colts, who signed the free agent Monday for the second time this month.
Hazel was claimed off waivers by Indianapolis on Sept. 3, a day after being cut by the Washington Redskins, and played three snaps in the team’s season-opening 46-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, recording his first career catch for 1 yard.
The Colts cut Hazel last week in order to promote linebacker Darnell Sankey from their practice squad. Sankey saw action in the Colts’ 13-10 loss to Arizona but was cut Monday so the team could again sign Hazel.
Hazel was drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2014. He played his first two seasons there but saw action in only five games before being waived at the start of the 2016 season. He joined the Buffalo Bills practice squad but was released and joined the Redskins practice squad, and did not make the cut this season to the Redskins’ 53-man roster.
Hazel, who is 6-1 and 195 pounds, holds the CCU record for career receptions with 183.
