Only time will tell if Hurricane Irma and her impacts will affect the Grand Strand.
If nothing else, it has done a number on the Coastal Carolina athletics schedule.
On Thursday, Coastal Carolina announced it would be closing the Conway-based campus Friday at 5 p.m. All classes, events and activities scheduled for Thursday evening were cancelled

▪ Cross country team’s Fleet Feet CCU Invitational event (Sept. 8);
▪ Men’s tennis matches scheduled for Sept. 8-10 at UNC Wilmington;
▪ A women’s soccer match against Jacksonville (Sept. 8);
▪ Volleyball’s Coastal Carolina Classic.
Also cancelled was the CCU athletic program’s “Day of Giving,” intended to help with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana.
A few activities were moved from the local area to higher ground.
The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team will head to Radford on Saturday, the contest scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Its volleyball team will now take part in a weekend tournament at UNC Greensboro, matching up against American University and Florida Atlantic.
Weather concerns have also forced the S.C. Golf Center Junior Classic to scrap plans for this weekend’s activities at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club in Conway.
“We were looking at having a solid field of players for both the girls and boys divisions. However, due to Hurricane Irma and the potential for dangerous weather we have decided to cancel the event,” said Josh Jackson and Nathan McDonough in a prepared statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but our main concern is the safety for the kids and everyone involved.”
Tournament committee members are currently looking to reschedule the event.
A host of high school athletic events are also being postponed or canceled as well.
