CCU volleyball loses to North Carolina in NCAA tournament’s second round

A day removed from winning an NCAA tournament match for the first time, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team got off to a fast start against No. 7 national seed North Carolina.

The Chanticleers took the first set 25-23; however, North Carolina took over from there, winning the second (25-19), third (25-17) and fourth (25-16) sets to reach the Sweet 16.

Coastal had reached the second round via a five-set victory over James Madison the day before, earning its first-ever NCAA tourney win. The Chants also set a program record with 28 wins, finishing with five losses, and tied a program record with their 18th straight victory.

That historic feats came to an end Saturday, when the Tar Heels – led offensively by the trio of Hayley McCorkle (14 kills), Taylor Leath (13) and Beth Nordhom (11), and defensively by holding Coastal to a .178 hitting percentage – proved too much.

Leah Hardeman had a match-high 25 kills for the Chants, who had 17 shots blocked by UNC.
