The big picture

What it means

The Chanticleers (6-2) completed their 2016 road schedule with a 48-17 win over Presbyterian on Saturday, their ninth straight win over the Blue Hose.

Coastal went 3-1 on the road this year, with wins over Lamar (38-14) in the opener, Gardner Webb (17-7) and Presbyterian, and a loss to Jacksonville State (27-26) in the third game of the season, when starting quarterback Josh Stilley was lost for the season with a knee injury in the second quarter. Jacksonville State is ranked No. 2 in the STATS FCS national poll.

The defense continues to be opportunistic. A week after scoring two defensive touchdowns against Central Connecticut State, Coastal recovered a fumble and recorded three interceptions that led to 22 points at Presbyterian.

Looking ahead

Coastal plays its final four games of the season at home, beginning Saturday against Monmouth at 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. The newest members of the CCU Athletics Hall of Fame will be recognized at halftime.

Monmouth is 4-5 and has lost three straight games to Presbyterian, Liberty and Kennesaw State. The Hawks’ 49-17 loss at home Saturday to Kennesaw State dropped them to 0-4 in the Big South Conference. Monmouth has wins this season against Lehigh, Delaware State, Fordham and Howard.

The Chants could be getting key players on offense and defense back from injury Saturday. Senior safety Richie Sampson has missed one-plus game with a knee injury and senior running back De’Angelo Henderson has missed two-plus games with a shoulder injury, and may return and attempt to extend his NCAA Division I-record streak of touchdowns in 32 consecutive games.

The Chants now have experience backing up Henderson, as both senior Kenneth Daniels and freshman Jah’Maine Martin rushed for 100 yards or more Saturday. “I’m just doing what they ask me to do, that’s all,” Martin said.

Safety C.J. Thompson: The senior intercepted two passes, giving him three in his career including one as a sophomore. “I want to get more these last four games. I’m excited,” Thompson said.

Punter Evan Rabon: The sophomore had just two punts, but both were downed inside the Presbyterian 20, including one at the 2 after Dontay Hears leaped in the air to bat the ball near the goal line.
