Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was asked about former Gamecocks football coach Steve Spurrier during an interview Tuesday with the South Carolina Radio Network.

Spurrier was a coach in the USFL, briefly a rival of the NFL, in the 1980s when Trump was a team owner.

“I think Steve Spurrier is a very good guy. I really liked him a lot. I watched him (at South Carolina),” Trump said. “I don’t know what happened the last little while, but I watched him over here. But I think he’s a very good guy and a sweetheart.”

Trump is the favorite to win in South Carolina after his victory in New Hampshire. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, the Iowa winner, is polling second in advance of South Carolina’s GOP primary Saturday.
